Thai Events and Festivals

Travel is interesting and festivals and events can enhance the experience. In this section I look to add an insight to some of Thailand's colourful Events and Festivals.

Below is a list of Events and festivals here in Thailand. This includes the date for 2012  and, should there be a link to a more detailed page, the photo will be a link. National holidays are indicated in bold. They are usually low key provided you don't need to use a government office. 
Some areas will however restrict the sale of alcohol on national holidays particularly if they are Buddhist holidays.

Children Day 14/01/2012

A day where children are celebrated and many public places are opened to them (usually free of charge)
Government holiday.

Chinese New Year (start) 23/01/2012

Although not an official holiday in Thailand, the lunar Chinese New Year is widely observed with celebrations, fireworks. As you would expect many of Chinese decent close their businesses and take a holiday closing shops and restaurants and filling hotels.

Makkha Bucha celebrates first sermon to his followers by the Buddha .
National Holiday 

Chakri Day 06/04/2012

In honour of the founding of the current dynasty, King Rama I, the first of the House of Chakri is celebrated on this day.

Songkran 13-15/04/2012

Perhaps Thailand's best known festival, Songkran is the traditional Thai new year, generally celebrated as a water festival. It has proved to be very popular with overseas tourists who seem to relish the prospects of water fights.

His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej was crowned in 1950 and Coronation Day celebrates this.

Visakha Bucha 05/05/2012

This holiest of Buddhist holidays celebrates the birth, enlightenment and entry into nirvana of the Buddha. It is also national tree day.

Royal Ploughing Ceremony 11/05/2012

A ceremony based on the ancient blessing of the plants and start to the new growing season. The action takes place on Bangkok's Sanam Luang in front of the Grand Palace.

Asalaha Bucha 03/07/2012

Buddhist observance commemorating the Buddha's first discourse, the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta.

Khao Phansa (Buddhist Lent) 04/07/2012

This day marks the beginning of  Vassa, the Buddhist 'lent' period, a time when monks are supposed to retreat to their temples while new life springs forth.

Queen's Birthday 12/08/2012

Her Majesty the Queen's birthday is a national holiday, also serving as Thailands Mothers Day as well.

Chulalongkorn Day 23/10/2012

Celebrates the life of one of Thailand's most revered kings on the anniversary of his death.

Loy Krathong 27-29/11/2012

Not a national holiday, but a time when Thais pay respect to the goddess of the waters by floating candlelit offerings on any and all waterways around the kingdom. 
It is a lunar Festival and therefore not fixed. It usually falls in the month of November.

H M King's Birthday 05/12/2012

His Majesty the King's birthday is celebrated throughout the country and also serves as the nation's Fathers Day.

Constitution Day 10/12/2012 

This day celebrates the date in 1932 when the country was granted its first constitution. Generally low key.

New Years Eve 31/12/2012 

Similar to many countries, the Thais, who love to party anyway have New years eve as a national holiday.
