In ChiangMai.
ChiangMai, rose of the North, this old and historic city is a treasure trove waiting for everyone to discover. Often tagged onto the end of a tour of Thailand countless visitors vow to return.
ChiangMai has many benefits to the visitor and resident alike. It is surrounded by the foothills of the Himalayas and is an ideal base for viewing the jungle covered slopes. Hot springs abound, a favourite place for thias to enjoy where you can enjoy the effects of being in a geothermal zone and use the free energy to boil an egg or two of maybe take a bath.
Then of course there are the Wats. It is improbable that you will have enough time to see and explore all of Chiang Mai's fascinating temples, old and new.
Perhaps less understood as why a trip to Chiang Mai is such a good idea maybe that it is a pretty easy place to get to. Chiang Mai has a good international airport, you can link to the website by clicking HERE. It's roads are good and it has Thailand's most northerly rail link to Bangkok, a fascinating way to come here. Combine this with one of Thailand's best climates, and easy going pace of life, fantastic festivals and it is easy to see why I enjoy this city, its people and the area so much.
As always, comments via the contact page are always welcome.

Chiang Mai Festivals & Events
Thai Events and Festivals has its own page so national holidays and events tend to be listed there. You can link to it by CLICKING HERE. Below you will find goings on in the ChiangMai area and if you have something to add please get in touch via the Contact Al page.
ChiangMai is full of things going on, the night bazaar Anusarn market walking street on Sunday evening, the list goes on so you don't need a special event to enjoy the city.
But if you happen to be around when there is a festival or event why not enjoy.
In January there is the umbrella festival in bor sang a village famous for handcrafted paper, umbrellas and mementos. The flower festival at the beginning of February shows the beauty that is fertile area can produce with fantastic floral displays being paraded as floats.
February is also the month of the ToyRide an annual charity motorcycle event parading through the city to the X centre for fun and games for all ages. If you ride a bike (any size any style) why not join in? all you need is a smile and a toy donation to put a smile on the face of a child. For more info CLICK HERE.
The ChiangMai 6's are an annual socio-sporting (cricket) event with the cricket held in the daytime at the Gymkhana Club and thee social activities in and around Chiang Mai's fine hostelries.
Visit Wat Chedi Luang to see the candlelit procession on Makkha Bucha 7/2/12 and on Veshaka Bucha (4/7/12) thousands will walk in the evening up Doi Suthep.
Songkran, the Thai traditional new year, is one of the most famous Thai festivals with its parades and of course, the throwing of water. Chiang Mai is a little more gentile than the mai coastal tourist resorts with more observance of the traditional family atmosphere. Traditionally we cease the throwing of water here at 6pm so that you can go out to eat, drink and enjoy yourselves without the evening being spoilt by a drenching. Please observe this practice.
We also observe the "global" New Year with music, countdowns fireworks and lots of revelry all over the city.
Loy Kratong in November is a wonderful festival with parades, lanterns and Kratong s being floated away. Relaxed yet full of fun this is my personal favourite festival.

Places to Eat and Drink.
ChiangMai has a huge number of places for food and drink. Both Thais and visitors seem to spend half of their life eating here, the choice is huge plus there are a host of cookery schools so that you can take the taste home with you. Locations are listed on a LINKED Google map and I also try to put reviews on TripAdvisor which enables you to look at multiple opinions in one go. Some of my opinion and those of contributors are before and if you have something to add please use the Contact Page.
Wats in and around Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai is a wonderful place to experience Thai Buddhist temples. Great and small, ancient and modern there are all sorts to see from the famous Wat Pratat Doi Suthep to the Graphic images of the fate of those who transgress at Wat Mae Kaet.
Wat Mae KaetAlso known as Wat Mae Gat Noi or Wat Sri Dorn Chai Pa Tung Ngam Wat Mae Kaet is different from other Wats in ChangMai area with its garden containing graphic statue representations of the fate of those that transgress. Warning some of representations or no punches.
