                      Airports

                      Picture
Once a place of adventure, most airports are all too often a necessary evil part travelling.
Well here is hoping that some of this info helps.
Most of the content here relates to travel between the UK and Thailand with the local connections included. There are other featured  airports and if you have an airport you want to include please get in touch.
I don't waste time duplicating information that is readily available on the airports own web-site when all that is needed is to click on the link which will be the airport picture or logo. Any comments made on this site tend to be the opinion of myself or the individual that contributed the information and whilst I hope that it reflects the current situation it is a guide only and you should check on information that is important to your plans.
You can click HERE to go to a Google map.
As usual if you want to add or comment please get in touch via the Contact Al page.

In this section you will find listed the main UK airports and their primary connections with respect to travel to Thailand. As only London's Heathrow has direct flights to Thailand it is the only one rated as a HUB here.
Yes I know there are other fantastic airports around the UK and we would really welcome some input so if you have something to say or a photo to share or if you feel that your local airport has particular merit and deserves inclusion get in touch. As always the way to do that is via the Contact Al page and as usual the image here is a link.

                      London Heathrow (HUB) LHR

                      Picture
                      Image is link
As big a Hub as you get. Fly directly to Thailand with Thai, EVA, BA and Qantas.
All use terminal 3. Most indirect flights use terminal 3 and the wonderfully compact terminal 4. Terminal 5 is sort of the BA terminal but please note you don't fly to Bangkok from there, maybe if you have arrived at terminal 5 you can take the  little train thing?
My personal likes at Heathrow, terminals, 4 and 5 and the seafood bars for food.

                      London Gatwick LGW

Flights to Thailand via Dubai and Doha with Emirates and Qatar respectively or hub in Europe ie Amsterdam.
Gatwick now is the port for Air Asia X who will get you to Kuala Lumpur to hub.

                      Thai Airports

                      Picture
                      Suvarnabhumi
This section has the primary Thai airports listed. Should you be coming to Thailand it is highly probable you will fly into the newest of Bangkok s airports, Suvarnabhumi. Pronunciation is easier than it looks; sue-anna-poom.
International passenger flights no longer use the older Don Mueang Airport.
Phuket Airport also carries a fair amount of international traffic with Chiang Mai to a lesser extent. One point to note in Thailand is that whilst an airport may be called an "international airport", international flights may actually not arrive and depart from there! The term may refer to the fact that you can clear customs on arrival there, your bags having been transferred directly for you at your Thai airport of arrival. Similarly you may be able to check your bags all the way through to your final destination and clear immigration when departing from there.
If you want to add to the info here please use the contact Al page.

                      Bangkok Suvarnabhumi BKK

                      Picture
                      Image is link
Thailand's new international Hub with connecting flights from and to just about everywhere. This is where your international flight will probably dump you.
The new train into town is in service now.
Overall BKK is a clean modern facility that handles large passenger volumes pretty well. There are plenty of places to exchange money. If you are a smoker there are smoking rooms air-side in international. If you are land-side you have to go outside. Food and drink is available land-side mostly on level 3 and air-side (Domestic has a food area and international has many varied outlets). The Thai airways 1st class lounge is probably the best in the world.
If you arrive from an international flight and are transferring and checked through to domestic destination YOU MUST COMPLY WITH THE 100ml RULE which means you CANNOT TAKE DUTY FREE IN YOUR HAND LUGGAGE.
You are, however allowed to buy duty free at your destination.

                      Image is link
Thailand's second largest airport and a Hub for Air Asia. The so called Thai Mafia reported hold on tourism in Phuket may be the reason for high taxi fares (in Thai terms). Phuket has direct flights from many oversea cities and connects with a host of Thai domestic destinations.

Once Bangkok and Thailand's main airport it's role has reverted to regional flights by NOK and 1-2-GO, freight and military.
Currently not in use due to the flooding.

Thai connections, plus direct flights from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and seasonal flights to/from Scandinavia. This is a sort of quaint little airport that is easy to use. Very little in shopping and refreshment.

Once you have got through the procedural security making sure all your carry on bags have stamped tags you are in a very nice area. As a general statement though, food and drink establishments tend to want Indian money or you can use credit cards of course. The is one place for food and drink that reportedly takes sterling.
